Mark Cornelius Nowlen, age 70, died Tuesday morning, February 16 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. B. Rouse, of this city. He had been living in Ellensburg and his condition was not considered serious until a week ago when he was brought at Sunnyside and placed under constant care. His death came after the second paralytic stroke and hardening of the of the arteries.
Mark C. Nowlen was born Sept, 23, 1861, at Forestberg, Texas. He was married to Sarah Francis Horbert [sic] in 1880. To this union three children were born, Mrs. Rouse and two who died in infancy. He united with the Christian Church in 1890. He moved to Lind, Washington in 1897. The family tie was broken when Mrs. Knowlen [sic] died in 1901 at Lind. He married Nora Russell in 1903. To this union four children were born. Mrs. Lena Bremmer [sic], Curtis, Washington, Mrs. Rosie Kettleson [sic], Kalama, Washington, Dornie Nowlen, Ellensburg, Washington, and Eleanor Nowlen of Falls City, Oregon. Mrs. Nora Nowlen died in Falls City in 1908.
In the year 1914 he married Maggie Haskins. To this union one child was born, Velma Howland, Kalama.
The funeral was at the Ball Chapel February 18, with the Rev. A. C. Hartley in charge. Mrs. Oral Skiles at the pipe organ with Mrs. Herbert Ball and sister rendered three musical numbers. The pallbearers were Mr. Nowlen’s sons-in-law.
He leaves to mourn his death besides the immediate family, three brothers, all of Plainview, Texas, 8 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was laid to rest in the Sunnyside cemetery.
The above obituary obviously omits mention of his fourth wife, Alice Haskins. Since Alice had been his step-daughter, undoubtedly his other children were not approving of this marriage and probably refused to acknowledge it. The information for the obituary was most likely provided by his daughter, Maude Rouse. In fact, his grandchildren were not even aware of his fourth marriage.
