    -----------
Iago ab Idwal ap Meurig (died 1039) was a Prince of Gwynedd.

On the death of Llywelyn ap Seisyll in 1023, the rule of Gwynedd returned to the ancient dynasty with the accession of Iago, who was a great-grandson of Idwal Foel.

Very little is known about the reign of Iago. He was killed by his own men in 1039 and replaced by Llywelyn ap Seisyll's son, Gruffydd ap Llywelyn. Iago's grandson Gruffydd ap Cynan later won the throne of Gwynedd, and because his father, Cynan ap Iago, was little known in Wales, Gruffydd was styled "grandson of Iago" rather than the usual "son of Cynan".

    Iago ab Idwal

IAGO (AB IDWAL AB MEIRIG,) prince of North Wales from 1021 to 1031. On the death of Llywelyn ab Sitsyllt, lago seized possession of the sovereignty of North Wales as being the right heir thereof, and kept it until 1031, when he was slain in battle by Gruffydd the son of Llywelyn. He left a son called Cynan who carried on the war against Gruffydd, by his wife Avandred, daughter of Gweir the son of Pyll. (Welsh Chronicles. Myv. Arch. ii. 507.) [Ref: Rev. Robert Williams, _Enwogion Cymru, A Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Welshmen, Longman & Co., London (1852), p. 236]

IAGO ab IDWAL ap MEURIG (d. 1039), king of Gwynedd; a great grandson of Idwal Foel. After successive usurpations of legitimate authority in Gwynedd between 986 and 1033 (see Maredudd ap Owain, Llywelyn ap Seisyll, Rhydderch ap Iestyn) the old line was restored in the person of Iago. A brief rule of six years ended in his murder and replacement by Gruffudd ap Llywelyn ap Seisyll. His [Iago's] son, Cynan, was the father of Gruffydd ap Cynan who finally re-established the house of Rhodri the Great as the senior dynasty in North Wales.

IAGO AB IDWAL AB MEIRIG (d. 1039), king of Gwynedd, was, probably on account of his tender years, thrust aside from the succession on the death of his father, Idwal ab Meirig, in 997. The usual struggle between rival claimants ensued, and among others, Llewelyn ab Seissyllt, who was not a member of the royal house, filled the throne for a period; but on his death, in 1023, Iago seized the sovereignty of Gwynedd, while that of Dyved fell to the bands of Rhydderch ab Iestyn (Brut y Tywysogion, p. 265). Iago gave refuge to Iestyn ab Gwrgant, who had violated Ardden, the daughter of Robert ab Seissyllt, and cousin of Grufydd ab Llewelyn ab Seissyllt. The latter thereupon attacked Iago and killed him after an obstinate battle in 1039. (Annales CambriŠ; Brut y Tywysogion; Gwentian Chron.) Gruffydd then placed himself on the throne occupied at an earlier date by his father, Llewelyn ab Seissyllt.
