The relationship of John Atwood to the Wheatons still needs to be verified. It appears from the census data, however, that he married Alice Brundige in Genesee County or Livingston County, New York, by 1830. We know the Brundiges were in those counties at the time, from other census data. They had two children while still in New York, Peter Dustin Atwood and Laura W. Atwood. Between 1833 and 1836, the family moved to Ohio, where five more of their children were born. Laura W. Atwood's marriage certificate lists her birthplace as Ohio, but her death record has it as New York. Since her family was on the move at the time, it's easy to see where the confusion could have arisen.
Alice Brundige Atwood apparently died between 1850 and 1860. Perhaps her death prompted Laura's departure to New York City, where she married John Wheaton.
John was living in 1880 with the family of his daughter, Harriet Atwood Armsby, in Kansas. It is likely he died there.
