  • Note:
    A. J. (Andrew Jackson) McCully, age 36 and wife Margaret, age 28, are found in the 1850 Chester, S.C. census. Children listed in this census are: Sarah A. (B.?) age 8, E.C. (Eliza) age 6, M.A. (Mourning Angeline) age 5, J. T. (James T.) age 1, and a child named William Woods (probable relative, see notes below), age 12. His household is shown as no. #383. Household no. #382 is that of John Collins age 41 and wife E.A. Collins, age 37. John is most likely the brother of Margaret Collins McCully.

Household no. #384 is that of John Furguson (Ferguson) age 76; household no. #385 is that of J.B. Furgeson (Ferguson) age 33, and the household on the other side of John Collins, household no. # 381 is that of R. Furgeson (Ferguson) female, age 73. See Ferguson file.

The 1860 Chester, York Co., S.C. census finds him listed as "Andrew" McCully, age 46 with Margaret, age 32. Children are: Morn A. (Mourning Angeline) age 15, James T. age 12, L. J.(Linda G. ?) age 9, J. R. (John R.) age 5, and W. W. (Wesley Whitman) age 1. Birthplace of all children is listed as Chester, S.C. except for W.W. (Wesley) McCully, the youngest in this census and his birthplace is listed as "Yd, S.C." (York District). Andrew McCully's place of birth is shown as Fairfield, S.C. and wife Margaret's is Chester on this census.

He appears again in the 1860 York Census, Township Coats Tavern, which seems to be a repeat of the same census. The house numbers are different but the sequence of all the individuals in this census remain the same including that of the Furgesons, correctly spelled "Ferguson" in this census and the Collins family.

    A. J. McCully, private, is listed in the roster of the 1st S.C. Calvary, Co. H, Robin Jones Calvary York Co., S.C. along with Abram and James T. Ferguson. This company was stationed at Staunton, Va. Sept./Oct. 1862, Sept. 24, 1862 marched from Adams Run, S.C. to Summerville, S.C. and reached Staunton Oct. 19, 1862.

Andrew Jackson McCully moved to Florida sometime after his service in the Civil War. He and Margaret Collins McCulley are buried in the King lot of Micanopy Cemetery along with Edwin Dye and Emma Dye (no date on graves), Kate Johnston and Thomas Johnston (no date on graves), several Fergusons including Joseph Ferguson b. Apr. 30, 1818, d. Feb. 5, 1882. Micanopy is a small Fl. town between Ocala and Gainesville.

The Wood(s) connection: Thomas Collins and Mourning Ferguson Collins, parents of Margaret Collins McCully, are found in the 1860 Chester census with a child, John Wood(s) age 9 in their household. Bethel Presbyterian Cemetery records show a Nancy M. Wood b. Mar. 17, 1788, d. June 23, 1824 buried next to S .H. McCully and Samuel McCully, sons of James McCully and Jane Dunwoody McCully,(who, in turn, are buried next to S. H. and Samuel) These 2 Wood(s) children are probable orphaned grandchildren of Nancy M. Wood. The 2 graves on the otherside of Nancy M. Wood appear to be indecipherable, but above these are the graves of David Johnston b. 1798, d. 1825, child Thomas N. Craig, age 1 yr, 3 mo. d. Apr. 30, 1818 s/o William and Margaret (this would be Margaret McCully daughter of Samuel).
