  • Note:
She was the wife of Gruffydd ap Rhys, Prince of Deheubarth, and the sister of Owain Gwynedd. During a revolt which spread through south Wales in 1 136, and in the absence of her husband, she led out an army against the No rman English, was defeated and killed. This has led some, rather exaggerat ing her historical significance, to christen her "the Welsh Boadicea". T he field where the battle is believed to have taken place, close to Kidwel ly Castle, is known as "Maes Gwenllian". Gwenllian's youngest son we nt on to become a notable leader, The Lord Rhys.
    (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Gwenllian, wife of Griffith ap Tudor, was the daughter of Gruffydd, or Gri ffith ap Conan, King of Gwynedd, North Wales. Her mother was Ynghared, da ughter of Owain of Tegeinge. Here is how the elders of her people describ ed Ynghared: Noble of stature she was, flaxen-haired, large-eyed, and of b right bearing. Slender and shapely. Small were feet and long her finger s, with fine thin nails. Wise of counsel, she was charming of speech. Ve ry kindly, too, and very bountiful to all folks in misfortune. So rare a nd fair a woman was Ynghared, wife to the King of Gwynedd, and she had a d aughter Gwenllian. Splendid as her mother was, as splendid was Gwenllia n. Youngest child of her father, she was the favorite of her brothers a nd sisters, as well as her parents. When young Gruffydd, or Griffith ap Rh ys, fled to Gwynedd for safety, it must have been from her that he receiv ed the sweetest sympathy. Nay, we know it was so, because when he sailed a way he carried with him her promise to be his wife. She was fit, indee d, to be the wife of such a prince. She did not wait for him to win his ki ngdom and then come to marry her in peace and magnificence. Instead she st ole away from her father's court and found a ship and sailed away and join ed her hero in the forest of Ystrad Towy. And there they were married, whi le the work of war had yet to be finished and the kingdom yet to be won. G allant Gwenllian. After that, no matter what wars were raging, she cheer ed the people by her high spirits and gentle courtesy, till all the lan ds loved her. And as her boys grew up they showed themselves bright, bra ve young princes, fit children of such a mother.

At last, however, a time came when her husband heard of a fresh attempt th at the Normans were planning against him, and that they were intendi ng to bring an extra army over sea to help them. To meet so great a dange r, he hurried away to Gwynedd to try to get extra men from her father. Gwe nllian sent her eldest boy with her husband, so that her old father and mo ther might see their grandson and know how happy she was.

Now, while she was alone at home, she suddenly heard that the Norman ar my from overseas had come before its time and was landed in Glamorganshir e. She knew that this army and the combined hosts of all the Normans wou ld destroy the land before her husband could return. So she gathered her f orces and they marched away at once, with Gwenllian with them. Finally th ey were defeated, her young son Maelgon was killed by her side, and she he rself was wounded and taken prisoner with her other son, Morgan. She had t ried to save her country and her people, because her husband was not the re to do it. She was in agony from her wounds as well as for her brave son s. She was the daughter of a king, but the Normans snowed her no pity a nd they hewed off her head. But long did the Normans rue the stroke that b eheaded Gwenllian, for her father joined with her husband in avenging he r. Her brothers led their hosts down from North Wales to join the men of t he south in a retribution that was told of for generations, in a battle wh ere the Normans were slaughtered and drowned by the thousands.
