    Richard de Clare, 4th Earl of Hertford (1162 December 30, 1218) was t he son of Roger de Clare, 3rd Earl of Hertford and Maud de St. Hilary. Mo re commonly known as the Earl of Clare, he had the moiety of the Giffard e states from his ancestor Rohese. He was present at the coronation of Ki ng Richard I at Westminster, 3 September 1189, and King John on 27 May 119 9. He was also present at the homeage of King William of Scotland at Linco ln.

    He married (c. 1172) Amice Fitz William, Countess of Gloucester (c. 1160-1 220), second daughter, and co-heiress, of William Fitz Robert, 2nd Ea rl of Gloucester, and Hawise de Beaumont.

    He sided with the Barons against King John, even though he had previous ly sworn peace with the King at Northampton, and his castle of Tonbridge w as taken. He played a leading part in the negotiations for Magna Carta, be ing one of the twenty five Barons appointed as guardians. On 9 November 12 15, he was one of the commissioners on the part of the Barons to negotia te the peace with the King. In 1215, his lands in counties Cambridge, Norf olk, Suffolk and Essex were granted to Robert de Betun. He and his son we re among the Barons excommunicated by the Pope in 1215. Sometime before 11 98 Earl Richard and his wife Amice were ordered to separate by the Po pe on grounds of consanguinity. They separated for a time because of th is order but apparently they reconciled their marriage with the Pope lat er on.

    Sir Richard de Clare, Surety for the Observance of the Magna Charta, 4th Earl of Hertford. In 7th of Richard I, 1196, he gave 1,000 marks to the King for livery of the lands of his mother's inheritance, with his proportion of those some time belonging to Walter de Gifford
    de Bolbec, Earl of Buckingham. His name occurs in the covenant made between King John and the barons, and he did not die until "the 3rd of the Calends of Dec. in the year after Christ 1218." He married Amicia (sister of King John's first wife) and 2nd daughter and coheiress of William, Count of Meullant, 2nd Earl of Gloucester o. s. p. m. 1183, and his wife Mabel, daughter of Robert de Bellomont; son of Robert the Consul, Earl of Gloucester; son of Henry I, King of England, by Elizabeth de Bellomont; daughter of Robert de Bellomont and Isabel; daughter of Hugh Magnus 12th, the Crusader; son of Henry I, King of France. They had Gilbert, his successor, Joan and Maud.
