Pensioner Dies in Burning Cottage BALLARAT, 'Monday. ? DavidWilliamDavies, 73 years, pensioner of Ross Creek death when the four roomed cottage in which he lived alone caught fire tonight. The victim had been in ill-health and it is thought he was warm some liniment over a fire when his clothing became ignited. The house was ablaze when the flames were noticed by his sister, Mrs Mary Satchell, 75 years, who lives about half a mile away. She rushed to the scene and saw her brother near the front door of the burning building. She made a gallant attempt to rescue him but was overcome by the smoke and narrowly escaped a similar fate to that of her brother as the walls of the cottage collapsed. An inquest has been opened and adjourned.
