The couple moved to a farm near Salem, and have lived in this vicinity ever since their marriage. In 1944 they retired from farming and moved to town. They observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1954.

Article taken from "100 Years of Faith 1885-1985" published by St. Mary's Catholic Church, Salem, South Dakota in 1985.
William Sabers took Anna Osterhaus as his bride in 1904 at New Vienna, Iowa. They moved to Salem, SD a month later to a farm four miles west and one and half north of Salem. In 1910 they moved just three miles west. They farmed there until 1944 when they retired and moved into Salem, just across the street from St. Mary's church. Anna Sabers was always ready to clean the muddy footprints left in church. One could see her going or coming from the church many times.
They belonged to this parish all their married life and celebrated their golden wedding in 1954. They were parents of twelve children. Two died very early in life and the remaining were: Elmer, Edgar, Esther (Mentele), Melvin, Gilbert, Marcella (Koepke), Muriel (Gstohl), Elvira (Herting), Gerald, and Willard. William died in 1957 and Anna in 1970.
Edgar Sabers married Tillie Bartscher. They and all of their children were baptized and educated in St. Mary's school. Tillie graduated with the first class graduating from St. Mary's High School. All the children were married in St. Mary's.
Edgar and Tillie's children: Lyle, Sally (Jorgenson), Judy (Eichacker), Jane (Weber), Kenneth, Jack, Terry, and Dan. Many of their family are still in our parish.
Melvin and his wife Ida (Duxbury) belong to St. Mary's also.
