  • Note: James Wasson joined the Fifth Company, Second Regiment (Schenectady Distri c-Albany County), New York State Militia,. This company was commanded by h is uncle Captain Thomas Wasson; his first lieutenant was his first cousi n, John Little; and his second lieutenant was his great uncle, John Thornt on. (The Wassons, Littles, and Thorntons were all families of Scotch-Iri sh ancestory who had little live and no loyalty towards the Hanoverian-Eng land King, George III) The regiment was commanded by Colonel Abraham Wempl es, and was part of the Albany County Militia Brigade commanded by Gener al Abraham Ten Broeck. James Wasson fought at the Battle of Bemis Heigh ts on October 7, 1777, during the Saratoga Campaign, and was present at t he surrender, on October 17, 1777, of General "Gentleman Johnny" Burgoy ne and his entire British army. In 1770, James Wasson joined the Eighth Co mpany of the Fifth New York Continental Regiment. The company was command ed by Captain John E. Hamtramck (later the founder and namesake of Hamtram ck, Michigan); the regimental commander was Colonel Lewis Dubois. The regi ment was part of the New York Continental Brigade commanded by General Jam es Clinton. They served under General John Sullivan during his campaing ag ainst the Iroquois Indian Nation, and fought at the Battle of Newtown on A ugust 29, 1779. For his service, James Wasson received a 400 acre gra nt of land at Sterling, New York; and was granted a Federal Invalid pensi on from 1820 to 1848; his pension file number being 43,241
