Cyrus W. Strickler Sr. served as the Georgia Tech University football coach in 1901, with a r ecord of 4-0-1.

    From Georgia Tech Alumni Magazine:
Before 1904, when John Heisman became the school's first permanent head coach, the team was " coached" by professors, interested townspeople or a player.

Professor Ernest E. West, a Naval College graduate, directed Tech's first football team in 18 92. In 1893 and 1894, the squad was coached by volunteers Frank O. Spain, a mathematics profe ssor, and Lt. Leonard Wood (who later became famous as the colonel in command of Roosevelt' s Rough Riders and as governor general of Cuba), then stationed at Fort McPherson in Atlanta . The rules were rather lax in those days, so Spain and Wood also played on the team.

The next volunteer coach of record was R.B. "Cow" Nalley in 1898, a "Mr. Collier" in 1899, Dr . Cyrus W. Strickler in 1901, and John McKee in 1902.

From Frank Duff (originally from the Georgia Tech Alumni Magazine):
Cyrus W. Strickler Jr., 31M, thought his father was someone worth remembering. Before the yo unger Strickler died earlier this year, he gave $275,000 to an endowment established at Emor y in his father's memory in 1954. He also transferred a pooled income fund to the Cyrus W. St rickler Sr. Memorial Scholarship Fund, bringing its total worth to $1 million. Cyrus Jr. fol lowed in his father's footsteps for much of his career, practicing internal medicine in Atlan ta and serving in the Emory unit at a US Army hospital during wartime. Father served during W orld War I, and son served in World War II. Income from the endowment, which began at $30,00 0, supported five students during the 1997-1998 academic year. The amount offered to each stu dent will continue to grow, thanks to this recent gift. The elder Strickler, a professor eme ritus in clinical medicine at Emory, began teaching in 1899 at the Atlanta College of Physici ans and Surgeons, which later became part of the Emory School of Medicine. He helped the scho ol through many tumultuous times, devoting much of his career to Emory without compensation . During his career, he contributed much to medical research, practice, and education, author ing many scientific papers and introducing bedside teaching to medical students. Like his fa ther, the younger Strickler was an eminent presence in the Atlanta medical community, servin g as president of the Emory University Hospital staff and chairman of the board of the Fulto n County Medical Society.
