Mrs. Augusta Paul, 84, of 2738 So. 18th suffered severe head injuries in a runaway car crash near 26th and Holdrege.
The woman had been waiting in the car with its motor running for her son, Ewald Paul, 59, of 3097 U, who had stopped to pick up a friend.
Police speculate Mrs. Paul accidentally stepped on the accelerator of the car as it started to creep forward. Police believe she probably tried to step on the brake and hit the accelerator instead.
The runaway vehicle traveled 178 feet and struck a tree between Holdrege and Dudley on 26th.
