Under the charter of 23 March 1580/1 he had sasine of the Earldom (in reversion), 11 June 1583. In November 1594 he was delivered to the King as a pledge by his father, after whose death he was charged to meet Lennox at Aberdeen, 15 January, and to remain in Edinburgh, April 1595. He attended meetings of the P.C. [SCT], 12 December 1597 and 18 May 1598, and bore the sword before the King in Parliament [SCT], 13 December 1597. On his resignation he obtained, 29 April 1601, a novodamus of the Earldom, with a grant of the office of Hereditary Sheriff of Sutherland, in favour, failing heirs male of his body, of his brothers Robert and Alexander Gordon, and their issue male, with an extended remainder to Adam Gordon, 3rd son of George, 1st Marquess of Huntly [SCT], and his heirs male whatsoever. By the same charter the Earldom was erected anew into a Regality. Like his father he was often at feud with the Earl of Caithness, with whom he disputed precedence. He had licence to go abroad for his health for 3 years, 28 June 1608 and 22 January 1610/1; and for his persistent "papistrie" he was ordered by the P.C. [SCT], 18 November 1613, to sequester himself in St. Andrews before 10 January following. He married, 5 February 1599/1600, in Edinburgh, Agnes (or Annas, tocher 20,000 merks), 1st daughter of Alexander (ELPHINSTONE), 4th LORD ELPHINSTONE [SCT], by Jean, daughter of William (LIVINGSTON) 6th LORD LIVINGSTON [SCT]. He died of a bloody flux 11 September 1615 at Dornoch and was buried there aged 39. His widow, who was born 27 October 1579, died 18 September 1617 at Crakaig, aged 37, and was buried with him.
