!EARLDOM OF DUNFERMLINE I.1. ALEXANDER SETON, 4th son of George, 5th LORD SETON [SCT], by Isabel, daughter of Sir William HAMILTON, of Sorn and Sanquhar, High Treasurer of Scotland. He was born 1555, Mary Queen of Scots being his Godmother, and was educated at the Jesults' College at Rome; Prior or Pluscarden 17 September 1565, displaced about 1577, reinstated 1581; professed the Protestant faith on his return to Scotland; P.C. [SCT] 158S; a Lord of Session [SCT] Extraordinary, 1585/6-87/8; Ordinary (under the style of LORD URQUHART), 1588-93; Lord President, 1593-1605, being one of the "Octavians" of the Treasury [SCT] 1596-97. He was, 4 March 1597/8, created LORD FYVIE [SCT],with remainder, failing heirs male of his body, to his next elder brother, Sir John Seton, of Barns, in like manner; Lord Provost of Edinburgh, 1598-1608; on 27 January 1604/5 he had a grant of denization; on 12 February 1604/5 he was discharged of the custody of Charles Duke of York, with an attestation that the Prince was in perfect health; Lord Chancellor [SCT], 1605 till his death. On 4 March 1604/5, he was created EARL OF DUNFERMLINE [SCT] to him and his heirs male. P.C. [ENG] 1609/10; Commissioner to the Parliament [SCT] of 1612. He married, 1stly, about 1590, and before 1 July 1592, Lilias, 2nd daughter of Patrick (DRUMMOND), 3rd LORD DRUMMOND [SCT], by his 1st wife, Elizabeth, daughter of David (LINDSAY), 9th EARL OF CRAWFORD [SCT]. She died s.p.m., 8 May 1601, at Dalgety, co. Fife. He married 2ndly (contract dated at Leslie, 27 October 1601), Grizel, sister of the half-blood of John, EARL OF ROTHES [SCT], daughter of James LESLIE, MASTER OF ROTHES, by his 1st wife, Margaret, [then aged 15] daughter of Patrick (LINDSAY), LORD LINDSAY OF THE BYRES [SCT]. She died 6 September 1606. He married, 3rdly, 1607, Margaret, sister of John, 1st EARL OF TWEEDDALE [SCT], daughter of James (HAY), LORD HAY OF YESTER [SCT], by Margaret, daughter of Mark (KERR), EARL OF LOTHIAN [SCT]. He died 16 June 1622, aged 66, at Pinkie, near Musselburgh, and was buried 9 July at Dalgety, co. Fife. His widow married (contract 1633) James (LIVINGSTON), 1st EARL OF CALLENDAR [SCT], who died s.p., at Callendar House, and was buried 25 March 1674, at Falkirk. She died at Fyvie 30 December 1659, and was buried 20 January 1659-60, at Dalgety, with her 1st husband. Complete Peerage, 4:532, 14:287.

He married, 1stly (contract 11 January 1651/2), Anne, 1st daughter of William (KERR), EARL OF LOTHIAN [SCT) by Anne, suo jure COUNTESS OF LOTHIAN [SCT]. She died 30 August 1658. He married, 2ndly, 29 October 1660, Marion, widow of James (OGILVY), 1st EARL of FINDLATER [SCT], 4th daughter of William (CUNNINGHAM), 7th EARL OF GLENCAIRN [SCT], by Janet, 2nd daughter of Mark (KERR), 1st EARL OF LOTHIAN [SCT]. She died s.p., and was buried January 1660/1, at Holyrood. He married, 3rdly, 5 August 1663 (contract 27 June), Sophia, sister of Thomas (ERSKINE), 2nd EARL OF KELLIE, 3rd daughter of Alexander, styled VISCOUNT FENTOUN, by Anne, 1st daughter of Alexander (SETON), 1st EARL OF DUNFERMLINE [SCT], Chancellor of Scotland.
