    !EARLDOM OF MENTEITH [SCT] XV.4. JOHN (GRAHAM), EARL OF MENTEITH [SCT], son and heir, was possibly present in Parliament 4 and 15 December 1543, and certainly from 26 June 1545 to August 1560, and at a convocation of the Estates, December 1561. He was taken prisoner at the rout of Solway Moss, 24 November 1542, but ransomed in July 1543. P.C. [SCT], sitting at the meeting of that body 26 June 1545. He had sasine 26 May 1547. He accompanied the Queen Dowager to France in August 1550. In 1554 he was made justiciar in the stewardry and Earldom of Menteith. Four years later he joined, and became an active member of, the Lords of the Congregation. He married (contract 8 October 1548) Marion, 1st surviving daughter of George (SETON), 4th LORD SETON [SCT], by his 1st wife, Elizabeth, daughter of John (HAY), 3rd LORD HAY OF YESTER, [SCT]. He died January 1564/5. His widow married soon afterwards, as 3rd wife, John (GORDON), EARL OF SUTHERLAND [SCT]. They both died from poison, 23 June 1567, at Dunrobin. She was buried at Dornoch.     !He (John Gordon) married, 3rdly, Marion, widow of John (GRAHAM), 4th EARL OF MENTEITH [SCT] (died January 1564/5), 1st daughter of George (SETON), 4th LORD SETON [SCT], by his 1st wife, Elizabeth, daughter of John (HAY), LORD HAY OF YESTER [SCT]. He (aged 41) and his said wife died together 2 June iS67 at Dunrobin, from the effects of poison administered to them 5 days previously,(e) and were buried in July at Dornoch. [e] The Earl of Caithness, who had long been at feud with the Earl of Sutherland, is said to have prevailed on his cousin, Isabel Sinclair, wife of Gilbert Gordon of Garty (Sutherland's uncle), to poison him, while staying in her house at Helmsdale. She was arrested and died miserably in Edinburgh, "haveing, as wes supposed, maid herselff away, least shoe should have suffered a just punishment for so wicked a cryme; even at her last gasp still exclaiming against her cousen, the Earle of Catteynes, and cursing him."
