!VI. 6. ALEXANDER (SETON, afterwards MONTGOMERIE), EARL OF EGLINTOUN and LORD MONTGOMERIE [S.], cousin (ex parte materna) and heir according to the settlement of 1611, being 3rd but 2nd surviving son of Robert (SETON), 1st EARL OF WINTOUN [SCT], by Margaret, 1st daughter of Hugh (MONTGOMERIE), 3rd EARL OF EGLINTOUN [SCT]. He was born 1588. By royal charter 24 March 1614/5, he was confirmed in the peerage dignities, settled in 1611 (in the entail of the comitatus by the late Earl) as "Earl of Eglintoun and Lord Montgomery" [SCT] to him and "his heirs male of entail and provision" contained in the previous charter. At the Coronation of Charles I, at Holyrood, 18 June 1633, he carried "the spurs." He, however, took an active part with the Parliament party against the King, being popularly called "Grey Steel" on account of his courage; was a ruling elder of the Church [SCT], and fought against the King at Marston Moor in 1644; in 1650, however, he was Captain of the Horse Guards to the King, and was imprisoned as a Royalist till 1660, when he was released, and joined Charles II in Holland. He married, 1stly, 22 June (contract 6 June) 1612, Anne, 1st daughter of Alexander (LIVINGSTON), 1st EARL OF LINLITHGOW [SCT], by Eleanor, daughter of Andrew (HAY), 8th EARL OF ERROLL [SCT]. She, who had been Maid of Honour to Anne, Queen Consort of James I, died 12, and was buried 24 November 1632. He married, 2ndly, between November 1642 and March 1643/4, Margaret, widow of James (Ross), LORD Ross [SCT] (who died December 1632), and 1st daughter of Walter (SCOTT), 1st LORD SCOTT OF BUCCLEUCH [SCT], by Margaret, daughter of Sir William KER. She died without issue by him, 3 October 1651, at Hull, where he was a prisoner, and was buried at Dalkeith. He died at Eglintoun, 7 January, and was buried 14 February 1660/1. [CP 5:30-1]

!Hugh, 5th Earl, died leaving no male heir after 450 years of an unbroken line of Montgomeries by male issue. Before he died, however, he obtained a Crown Charter in 1611 to name a successor in the female line, his Aunt, Lady Margaret Montgomerie who had married the First Earl of Winton and by him had three sons. By this charter the eldest of these, Sir Alexander Seton of Foulstruther took the name and arms of Montgomerie of Eglinton with all the estates and privileges. So the 6th Earl was Sir Alexander Montgomerie, Earl of Eglinton. Montgomeries of Eglinton, Strathclyde Department of Education, Ayr Division.
