    ***
About 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon a sad and fatal accident occurred about six miles from Prudenville, on the Mackinaw division of the M.C.R.R., by which the unfortunate victim, Bernard O'Donell, was instantly killed. From James Collins, of Houghton Lake, we learn that O'Donell left Prudenville yesterday afternoon on a log train to ride to the headquarters of C.B. Fields & Co.'s camp, where he was to drive team, and being desirous of getting off before the trained stopped he attempted to jump while the train was ascending a grade through a narrow cut, the sides of which are nearly perpendicular. He made the leap safely but was unable to gain a footing and rolled down the embankment and under the wheels of the moving train, a portion of which passed over his body crushing his skull, breaking in two places the bones of his left leg and arm, and mangling him in a terrible manner. The train stopped as soon as possible and the body taken to the headquarters of the company whence they were shipped to this city, arriving here this morning, and taken to the Toohey house where they now are under the charge of Undertaker Loose. Deceased was 47 years old and leaves a wife and nine children at his former home in Mount Forest, Wellington Co., Ont., where the remains will be shipped this evening. Those who were acquainted with the deceased say that he was at one time in comfortable circumstances, and that his family is well connected. And thus another victim is added to the long list that have met death through the instrumentality of the railroad. [Evening Examiner, West Bay City, Michigan, May 25, 1883]
