Birth: 17 JAN 1838 in Pilkington Twp, Wellington Co, Ontario
Death: 25 SEP 1909 in Elora, Ontario of bronchial cold & heart failure
Burial: Elora Municipal Cemetery

The decease of Mrs. James Broley, took place at the home of her son-in-law, Mr. Thomas Godfrey, on Saturday morning, Sept. 25th, very unexpectedly.
The deceased returned on Tuesday evening, Sept. 14th, from a visit to relatives in Toronto. She contracted a slight bronchial cold, but it was not considered serious by herself or her friends. About two o'clock Saturday morning she talked with Mrs. Drury, who was attending her, and shortly after went to sleep and passed peacefully away, death being due to heart failure.
Mrs. Broley's maiden name was Maria Matthews, she was a daughter of the late Abram and Diana Matthews. To her father, tradition ascribes the felling of the first tree on what is now the site of Elora, and her grandfather, Roswell Matthews, built the first house in Elora. The deceased was in her 72nd year, and was a native of the Township of Pilkington, her father's home at that time being near Ponsonby, later removing to Acton. She was married at Acton on June 9th, 1861, to the Rev. James Broley, Methodist Minister.
Rev. Mr. Broley died suddenly at Palmerston on Sept. 3rd, 1890, while stationed in Fergus. He was buried in the Elora Cemetery. In July 1891 Mrs. Broley came to Elora where she had since resided. She is survived by a family of two sons and two daughters, viz; Warner E. Broley, District Manager of the Manufacturers' Life Insurance Co., Elora; Charles L. Broley, Manager of the Merchant's Bank, Delta; Mrs. Thomas Godfrey, Elora; and Mrs. Richard D. Norris, of Toronto. Besides these, three brothers and one sister are still living; John Matthews, Toronto; James Matthews, Postmaster at Acton; Edward Matthews, Berlin; and Mrs. Robert Sims, of Lansing, Michigan.
Mrs. Broley was of a benevolent, retiring disposition, ever ready with kindly word or deed, and was respected and beloved by all who knew her. This was abundantly testified to by the many floral tributes sent and by the attendance at the funeral services on Monday afternoon. The service was conducted by the Rev. D. W. Snider, assisted by the Rev's Mullan, McIntosh and Williman, of Elora, and Deacon, of Fergus. The church was filled with old friends who thus desired to pay a last tribute of respect to the memory of one who was justly held in the highest esteem.
