    There passed away in the village on Sunday, another pioneer in the person of Mrs. Martin Monk, aged 70 years and 5 months. Deceased had been ailing for some time and a paralytic stroke, which she suffered, terminated this earthly habitation. She was a kind and loving mother of a large and now grown up family of sons and daughters who are bereaved with the husband and father. The funeral took place on Wednesday from her late residence to the Lutheran Church, then to the cemetery opposite her residence. May she rest in peace. Rev. F.L. Howard, her pastor had charge of the services. [Hanover Post - March 1930]

    As mentioned in our Elmwood News column last week, a highly esteemed resident of thet village, in the person of Mrs. Martin Monk, passed to the great beyond on Sunday evening March 16 at 6:30 o'clock at the age of 70 years, 5 months and 15 days. Deceased was a pioneer of this district, having resided in this neighborhood for the past sixty years. She was a kindly woman and much loved by all who
    knew her.

    The late Mrs. Monk, whose maiden name was Hannah Gateman, was born in Waterloo Township in the year 1859. Shortly afterwards, the family moved to Brant Township and there she grew to young womanhood. In the year 1876, she was married to Mr. Martin Monk; and, they resided in Bentinck for 22 years, then moved to Brant and lived there for 27 years, later spending 2 years in Hanover and have since lived in Elmwood where the celebrated their Golden wedding 4 years ago.

    Mr. and Mrs. Monk were blessed with 12 children, 7 sons and 5 daughters as follows: Mrs. Fred Thedorf (Lizzie) of Brant, Mrs. Joseph Rody (Rachel) of Bentinck, Mrs. Harry Cairns (Emma) of Chesley, Mrs. William Stade (Dorothy) Chesley, Mrs. Emmanuel Litt (Anna) Hanover, William of Walkerton, Henry and George of Brant, Jack of Neustadt, Louis of Elmwood and Edmund of the old homestead. One son Samuel predeceased her 20 years ago. Besides the husband and family, Mrs. Monk is survived by 47 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
