William Monk aged 90 years. Dorothea Fredericka Monk aged 88 years.

William Monk was born January 17,1830 in Mecklenburg,Schwerin, Germany. He left there for Canada in October, 1853,landed in New York
on January 10,1854, reaching Preston, in Waterloo County, on January 17,1854. The journey across the ocean taking about 3 months. On June 5, 1854, he married Dorothea Fredericke Wendorf who was also born in Mecklenburg Germany. Mr.Monk worked for some time on the railroad and made shingles by hand in his spare time at night. In about 2 years they moved to Williamsburg,Waterloo County, where they bought 12 acres of land, and built a house and barn which he paid for largely by making shingles. In 1863 they moved to Hanover and remained with Mr. Conrad Hett, (where Mr. J.F. Knechtel now lives) for about 2 weeks until they got a shanty built on the farm now occupied by Mr.T.H.Francis, about 1 1/4 miles north of Hanover. They cleared the farm, using oxen and jumpers, and endured all the hardships of pioneer life, teaming his wheat and pork to Guelph and bringing back store goods for Mr.R.S.Lautenschlaeger, who kept a store where Mr.N. Bruder's store now stands, there being no railroad closer than Guelph at the time. From the Francis farm they moved to the farm now occupied by Fred Monk, opposite Mr. Curtis, which they also largely cleared and where they lived until they retired and moved to Elmwood where they both still live and are hale and hearty. On June 5 1904, they celebrated their Golden Wedding when all the children and grandchildren were present, about 110 in all. This estimable couple were blessed with 10 children: 7 sons and 3 daughters, all living with good homes and prosperous, and it has been pioneers of this kind that have made this Canada of ours what it is today.
