BREWER, Charles Edward (12 Jul 1866-1 May 1941) chemist and college president, was b in Wake Forest, the s/o John Marchant BREWER, farmer, of Nansemond Co., VA & Ann Eliza Wait BREWER. She was the d/o Samuel Wait,one of the fourteen founders of the North Carolina Baptist State Convention and the first president of Wake Forest College. Charles Edward was the youngest of ten children; the oldest, John Bruce, was for fifteen years president of Chowan College in Murfreesboro. The younger BREWER, prepared
for college in Vine Hill Academy in Scotland Neck, received a BA (1885) and a MA (1886) from Wake Forest. He did further graduate study at Johns Hopkins Univ & at Cornell Univ, where he was made a member of Sigma Xi and received a PhD in 1900...
On 28 Oct 1891, BREWER married Love Estelle Bell of Shawboro, d/o Joseph Etheridge Cartwright Bell & Ellen Dozier Bell. The BREWERs had four children: Joseph Bell, Ellen Dozier, Ann Eliza and Charles Edward....BREWER
died in Raleigh and was buried in the Wake Forest Cem.
BREWER, John Bruce (26 Oct 1846-20 Jun 1929), pioneer in the field of higher education for women, was b in Wake Forest, the oldest of ten children born to John Marchant & Ann Eliza Wait BREWER. John Marchant BREWER, a merchant-planter whose home was originally in Nansemond Co, VA, had settled in Wake Forest after attending Wake Forest College from 1838 to 1840. The BREWER ancestry has been traced to one Thomas BREWER of Somerset and London, England, whose son, John, settled in Warwick Co, VA bef 1629. Ann Eliza BREWER, d/o Samuel Wait, first president of Wake Forest College, traced her ancestry through the Wait, Merriam and Conant families of early New England.
BREWER probably received his earliest education under the tutelage of professors at Wake Forest College and under the care of his grandfather,Samuel Wait. He attended Bethel Hill Academy in Person County for at least one year and then served with the Second Regt, NC Junior Reserves, from May
1864 to May 1865, seeing action in the battles of Kinston and Bentonville.
He entered Wake Forest college upon being mustered out of the military, subsequently receiving both the BA (1868) and MA (1871) degrees....
BREWER was married to Ann Elizabeth Joyner of Franklinton on 2 Jul 1873. To their union were born nine children: Julia Henderson who m-George Francis Thomasson; Anne Bruce who m-Claude Gore; John Bruce who d in infancy; Mary Alice who m-John Gore; Jessie Thomas; William Marchant;Louise who d in infancy; Merriam Conant who d in infancy; Elizabeth Joyner who m-Ralph Armstrong.
A Democrat and a Baptist, BREWER took an active interest in the affairs of his church and denomination, especially in the work of educational institutions and in the Baptist Orphanage in Thomasville.
BREWER died in Blowing Rock, where he had been vacationing with two of his daughters. His body was returned to Wake Forest for interment in the family burial plot in the town cemetery.
